# Flickr embraces the public domain

This is an interesting move:

> But we’ve heard from our community that we’re missing two important designations: Public Domain and Creative Commons 0 (CC0). Many members of our community want to be able to upload images that are no longer protected by copyright and correctly tag them as being in the Public Domain, or they want to release their copyright entirely under CC0.

Flickr has embraced Creative Commons for over a decade. It’s interesting that they’re going a step further and allowing people to [release images into the public domain](http://blog.flickr.net/2015/03/30/flickr-now-offers-public-domain-and-cc0-designations/?ref=onemanandhisblog.com).

I’m serious considering doing that with some of my mother’s old images. It’s not quite [SpaceX](https://www.flickr.com/photos/spacexphotos?ref=onemanandhisblog.com) – who have been the first to do so. But it’s something.

*(Of course, bloggers and journalists might want to note that they have a new source of free images…)*
