Just once in a while, something comes along that restores your faith in parliamentary democracy. The Government comes out with an ill-judged, illiberal and unwise piece of legislation that erodes our basic rights in a knee-jerk reaction to terrorism; and then parliament votes it down.

I am a happy man tonight.
